What is compounding?

According to the FDA, "Animal drug compounding is the process of combining, mixing, or altering ingredients to create a medication tailored to the needs of an individual animal or a small group of animals, and these drugs can play a critical role in veterinary medicine."

Compounding can be done from FDA-approved finished goods or from active pharmaceutical ingredients obtained from FDA-registered repackagers.

Animal health compounding can be performed in a veterinary clinic, in a state licensed pharmacy (503A), or in an FDA-registered outsourcing facility.

Who regulates compounding pharmacies?

State Boards of Pharmacy

These boards oversee the licensing and regulation of pharmacies, including compounding facilities. They conduct regular inspections to ensure compliance with state-specific rules and regulations.

U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA)

The DEA regulates the handling of controlled substances, including those used in veterinary compounding. They require pharmacies to have specific licenses and follow strict procedures to prevent diversion.

Food and Drug Administration (FDA)

The FDA oversees the manufacturing of drugs, including those compounded by 503B outsourcing facilities. They set standards that compounding pharmacies must adhere to.

United States Pharmacopeia (USP)

USP standards are the global benchmark for medication quality and safety. These guidelines, including those for compounding, ensure consistency and public health.
